Wella was founded by German hairdresser Franz Stroher in 1880. Initially the company produced tulles, the base used for making wigs. As wigs and hairpieces fell out of fashion they diversified to permanent wave products launching the first perming appliance in 1927. After world war 2 the Company was seized by the German Democratic Republic and all patents were declared state owned. The Ströher family and some of the staff started the company from scratch again in 1945. Today Wella produces a huge range of Salon and take home products.
